Following invitation by the National sports commission to participate in the South East Amateur Boxing championship slated to hold from 23rd – 27th June, 2026 at Umuahia Township stadium, Abia State, the Enugu State sports council has fallen back to the Enugu State Grassroots Boxing Talent Hunt project sponsored by the speaker Enugu State house of Assembly, Rt Hon Uche c. Ugwu.
In a letter dated 10th June, 2026, addressed to the speaker and signed by a Deputy Director, Ude Blaise, the Enugu sports council appealed for permission to be granted the Coordinator of the Boxing Talent Hunt, Mazi Ikechukwu Okoronkwo to release two amateur boxers for the event.

The sports council named them to include Master Jude Ugwuanyi from, Udenu LGA and Miss Chisom Ani, from Nkanu West LGA.
He thanked Rt Hon Ugwu for the earlier release of Israel Ogbodo (Izzy Money), alongside UK based boxer, Kenneth Anigbo and a female boxer, Calestine Ekele for the National boxing camp in Abuja in preparation for the Commonwealth games scheduled to take place in Birmingham City.
The letter makes it clear that Enugu State relies heavily on the Grassroots Talent Hunt project to nurture boxers that will represent the state in the National sports festival that will hold in Enugu State that will commence from 26th November.

Hanto Daily News sports desk reports that the Enugu State Grassroots Boxing Talent Hunt initiated by Ex-International Boxer, Mazi Okoronkwo and sponsored by Speaker Enugu State House of Assembly, Rt Hon Ugwu has produced numerous talents making waves across different categories of boxing within and outside Nigeria.
