Rivers Impeachment Saga: Don’t take Nigerians for granted – Agbazuere warns parties

As stakeholders and professionals bare their minds on the current Rivers State political crisis, a Professor of Law, Anthony Chidiebere Brains Agbazuere, has warned parties to the current impeachment saga in the State not to take Nigerians for granted.

Prof Agbazuere who was speaking on the Arise TV interview programme reminded them that it was the people and governance that were suffering the effect of the current political debacle resulting from the initiation of impeachment proceedings against Governor Siminalayi Fubara and his Deputy, Prof Ngozi Odu by the House of Assembly.

The former Commissioner for Information and Chief of staff to the Governor in Abia State, who is also a renowned Labour Leader therefore called on all parties to sheath their swords in the interest of the peace and development of the Oil-Rich-State.

On the validity of the injunction stopping the Rivers Chief Judge from going ahead with impeachment proceedings as directed by the House, the Legal Luminary made it clear that though the House has the right to initiate such proceedings, the court on its own also has the right to look into the matter when a complaint on such issues are brought before it.

While enjoining people to wait for the hearing on the 23rd of January to find out the content of the argument presented before the court, Prof Agbazuere pointed out that all impeachment proceedings must follow the constitutionally recommended steps to pass the test of the law.

According to him, the house has no option than to wait for the outcome of the matter as acting otherwise would nullify the proceedings.

The Constitutional Lawyer stated that the interim court orders have frozen all impeachment actions by the Rivers State House of Assembly, arguing that the Speaker, lawmakers, Clerk, and even the Chief Judge are barred from taking any step until the motion on notice is heard.
