NERC fines Eight DisCos for over billing customers

Apparently in reaction to the persistent outcry by consumers, the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) has imposed sanctions on eight electricity distribution companies (DisCos) for failing to comply with monthly energy caps for unmetered customers between July and September 2024.

The affected DisCos are Abuja, Eko, Enugu, Ikeja, Jos, Kaduna, Kano, and Yola.

According to a statement issued this Thursday, they have been fined a total of N628,031,583.94, equivalent to 5% of the naira value of the gross overbilling for the period under review.

The statement directed the DisCos to issue credit adjustments to all affected Customers by 15 May, 2025.

It further pointed out that the DisCos’ billing practices revealed widespread non-compliance with the monthly energy caps.

Hanto Daily News reports that the sanctions will bring about relief to affected customers who have been overbilled.
