As Nigerians await decisions from actors in the Rivers State political crisis, the Rivers State House of Assembly under the Speakership of Martin Amaewhule and issued a 48-hour ultimatum to Governor Siminalayi Fubara, to present the 2025 budget to lawmakers for consideration.
The directive which came this Monday, the first sitting since being emboldened and empowered by the the Supreme Court judgment of Friday 28/2/25 marks the latest development in the ongoing power struggle between the executive and legislative arms of government.
The Assembly’s demand for the 2025 budget presentation within 48 hours signals renewed legislative pressure on the governor, who had previously presented a budget to a factional Assembly late last year which was eventually declared invalid by the courts due to questions over the legitimacy of the lawmakers who approved it.
Hanto Daily News reports that tension and suspicion are continuing to rise as many observers and politicians are apprehensive of the next line of action to be adopted by the sides to the political conflict.
Recall, following the court’s decision, Governor Fubara addressed the state in a televised broadcast, where he ordered the conduct of fresh local government elections and directed Heads of Local Government Administration (HLGAs) to take over governance at the council level.
Meanwhile, Supporters of Rivers State Governor, Siminalayi Fubara this Monday stormed streets in Port Harcourt to show solidarity with their leader.
The supporters, who are of the opinion that the Governor is being victimized following the recent judgement of the Supreme Court that sacked council chairmen, took over the Omuma LGA secretariat and other areas early hours of day.
