Senate, House of Reps approve proclamation of emergency rule in Rivers despite opposition from Notable Leaders and Groups

Despite opposition from many groups and notable Nigerians, the two arms of the National Assembly have approved Tuesday’s proclamation of a state of emergency in Rivers State by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

The NBA, Rights Groups, Legal Luminaries, distinguished Nigerians and even the Labour had called on the National Assembly to reject the state of emergency declared in the Oil-Rich South-South State by President Tinubu.

The approval by both the Red and Green Chambers indicates that the suspension of Governor Siminalayi Fubara, Deputy Governor Ngozi Odu and members of the Rivers State House of Assembly remain effective.

President Tinubu now has the authority to enforce emergency measures while requiring a review of the situation at any time, but no later than six months.

By the development, the National Assembly has also imposed a joint committee of both chambers to oversee the administration of affairs in Rivers State during the emergency period.

Further in its wisdom, the Senate resolved to establish a mediation committee made up of eminent Nigerians to help resolve the ongoing political crisis in the state.

The House of Representatives had earlier approved Tinubu’s declaration of emergency rule in Rivers through a voice vote.

Hanto Daily News reports that Two hundred and forty House of Representative members attended the preliminary which was presided over by Speaker Tajudeen Abbas.
