Rivers Monarch Calls for Unity, Peaceful Coexistence as Úpātá Kingdom Celebrates Wrestling Festival

The Paramount Ruler of Úpātá Kingdom, His Majesty Ny’údū Dr. Felix Enene Otuwarikpo, has called on Nigerians to embrace unity, tolerance and peaceful coexistence to strengthen national cohesion and foster sustainable development.

The monarch made the call during the opening ceremony of the Ètä Úpātá traditional wrestling festival held at the Edeoha Community playground in Ahoada East Local Government Area of Rivers State.

Speaking at the event, Ny’údū Otuwarikpo described the traditional institution as a critical pillar for community cohesion, conflict resolution and grassroots development. He urged traditional rulers and community leaders to continue promoting peace, security and unity as custodians of culture and tradition.

The royal father also hosted the leadership and members of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) at his palace, where he charged journalists to uphold responsible and development-oriented reporting that bridges the gap between government and the people.

He pledged continued collaboration with the NUJ to sustain media coverage of developmental activities in Úpātá Kingdom, noting that the media plays a vital role in societal reorientation and national development.

Addressing a large gathering of spectators, traditional rulers, politicians, business leaders and other dignitaries, the monarch said traditional wrestling remains deeply rooted in the cultural heritage of the Úpātá people, helping to preserve indigenous values while promoting courage, discipline and unity among the younger generation.

According to him, the annual Ètä Úpātá festival also provides a platform for indigenes to reunite, settle disputes and celebrate their shared cultural identity.

As part of the ceremony, Ny’údū Otuwarikpo inducted the traditional ruler of Ihubuluko Community, Chief Princewill Edi, into the Úpātá Traditional Council (UTC). He urged the newly inducted monarch to promote peaceful coexistence, strengthen community unity and support efforts to combat insecurity.

Speaking during the palace visit, Rivers State Chairman of the Nigeria Union of Journalists, Comrade Paul Bazia, described the visit as a courtesy call aimed at strengthening the existing relationship between the union and the kingdom.

Bazia reaffirmed the NUJ’s commitment to supporting initiatives that promote peace, inclusiveness and grassroots governance across Rivers State.
