NUT embarks on industrial action in seven Local Govts in Ebonyi

Following the inability of seven Local Government Chairmen in Ebonyi State to pay Teachers arrears of salaries owed them, the State chapter of the Nigerian Union of Teachers, NUT, has declared industrial action in the affected Local Government Areas.

The affected council areas include: Edda, Ebonyi, Ezza South, Ezza North, Ishielu, Ivo and Ohaukwu.

A Statement, signed by the State secretary, Comrade Basset Asuquo, pointed out that Sequel to their earlier notice on mobilization for industrial action, some Local Government Chairmen as at the close of work thursday February 5, 2025, have cleared the salaries of their members.

The statement however regretted that seven Local Government Chairmen have failed to clear the backlog of their members’ outstanding salaries.

The Statement therefore instructed, all state and branch Officers in the affected Local Government Areas to ensure the immediate enforcement of the strike action from this Thursday 6th day of February, 2025.

It condemns the action of the chairmen who failed to meet theobligations of their members, describing it as unacceptable and declaring that the union will not relent until the demands are met.

They statement enjoins all members to remain steadfast and continue their support for the strike action.

Recall, the Ebonyi State Governor, Francis Nwifuru had on 22 December, 2024 directed council chairmen to pay all outstanding workers’ salaries and pensions before 2.00 pm of Monday, December 23, 2024, a directive that is yet to be fulfilled until this time.

Efforts by Hanto Daily News to get the Ebonyi ALGON Chairman and Council Chairman Ebonyi Local Government Area, Chinedu Ubure to speak were unsuccessful.
