NBF Crisis – Ex-International calls for National Assembly, NSC intervention

A renowned Nigerian Ex-Boxing International, Mazi Ikechukwu Okoronkwo, has called on the National Sports Commission and the National Assembly to intervene in the leadership crisis within the Nigeria Boxing Federation (NBF) that led recent debacle at the World Boxing Championship in Liverpool.

Mazi Okoronkwo in a release said the current matter goes beyond the Secretary General, who unfortunately met the stakeholders crises upon assuming office.

According to him, their intervention would help to address the NBF’s internal problems and prevent further damage to Nigerian boxing.

He made it clear that the National Sports Commission, established by an act of parliament in 2023, is responsible for promoting sports development and physical fitness in Nigeria, stressing that it has the authority to supervise and manage national sports associations, including the NBF.

The Ex-international named some key areas the commission that need focus on to include reforming Sports Federations to ensure transparency, accountability, and effective management within the NBF, and Providing Adequate Resources Allocating sufficient for national teams and sports development programs.

The rest are promoting Grassroots Development by Focusing on talent identification and training as well as encouraging Private Sector Engagement to foster partnerships with private entities.

He made it clear that if these areas are addressed, the National Sports Commission would help stabilize the NBF and improve Nigeria’s performance in international boxing competitions.
