Premier League to introduce modification to VAR

The English Premier League is to introduce a significant modification to the Video Assistant Referee (VAR) system that will be implemented for the final seven matches of the 2024/2025 season.

According to League officials, semi-automated offside technology, SOAT, will be introduced to the Premier League.

To this end, the league has introduced a comprehensive six-point plan aimed at enhancing the accuracy, speed, and transparency of VAR decisions.

The video assistant referee has remained a contentious topic among both fans and clubs following controversies that arise from their calls.

Reports reveal that barely two months ago, the Premier League confirmed that 13 Video Assistant Referee (VAR) errors were recorded in the first 23 matches played this season as the league makes significant strides in addressing the challenges identified so far.

The 13 errors identified so far in this season’s Premier League campaign however indicate a noticeable improvement from the 20 errors documented at the same stage last season.

These errors comprise four incorrect VAR interventions and nine missed interventions, as highlighted by the Key Match Incidents panel.

The Premier League Chief Football Officer, Tony Scholes who is confident about the progress made recently, stated, “The strides taken in the last four to six weeks have been remarkable. We are confident that we will adopt the most accurate system available.”
