Health Workers donate to prison inmates in Umuahia

The Hospital management Board, Umuahia branch of the Medical and health workers union of Nigeria, MHWUN, has presented the inmates of the Umuahia Custodial centre with food items, toiletries and sanitary pads.

Speaking during the visit, the Chairperson of MHWUN Hospital HMB branch, Wokoma Chidinma Mary charged them to be of good conduct and hope on God for a better tomorrow as they undergo reforms .

Wokoma noted that the Union was concerned by the conditions of Prison inmates, including the female ones, some of whom she said, were falsely accused, adding that their visit was part of the May Day celebration.

She explained that while food and detergent were given to the inmates, roles of sanitary pads were given to the female inmates to guard against diseases and contamination.

Receiving the Delegation, the Assistant Chaplain at Umuahia Custodial Centre, Kalu Josephat Chukwuemeka pointed out that some inmates are also in need of free legal representation to perfect their release and also reduce congestion.

He made public that many inmates serving in the Centre have graduated from National Open University of Nigeria, while some are getting admission after sitting for NECO examinations inside the Umuahia Custodial Centre.

The assistant chaplain thanked the members of Medical for their visit and informed them that many inmates are also in need of sowing machines and other equipment for the inmates learning at the Correctional Centre’s workshop.
