Nigeria’s Presidency says that circulating reports of an alleged attempted coup could harm the country’s economy and deter potential foreign investors.
Speaking in an interview this Thursday, the Presidential spokesperson, Bayo Onaniga cautioned the public and the media against spreading unverified claims, pointing out that such could damage the country’s international reputation.
“Stories like that can destroy the country’s reputation and economy. We need to wait for facts and evidence, not rumours,” Onanuga stressed.
While confirming that some arrests were made, he however stated that no credible evidence linking the individuals to a coup attempt has been established so far.
Recall, there have been reports in the media and public space alleging that some military officers, including a Brigadier General, were involved in a plot to overthrow President Bola Tinubu’s administration, claims that were later dismissed by the Defence Headquarters.
