Road crash claims live of prospective Corps Member, eleven others in Ebonyi

One person has reportedly died with 11 others sustaining various degrees of injuries in an accident that occurred at Amenu village in Okposi, Ebonyi State along Amasiri-Okigwe highway.

Reports from the area say the 14-seater commercial bus which was conveying passengers at about 2pm Wednesday, rammed into a tipper truck, resulting to the death of a female passenger suspected to be a prospective corps member while those injured were rushed to the David Umahi Federal University of Health Sciences (DUFUHS) where they are receiving treatment.

Residents of the area said the prospective corps members boarded the bus in Enugu on Wednesday and were heading to the NYSC orientation camp located in Afikpo town, Afikpo Local Government Area of Ebonyi State for their orientation programme.

They are said to be prospective members of the 2024 Batch C Stream II set of corps members who resumed camp on Wednesday.

According to available reports, 12 out of the 14 passengers are prospective Corps members and were rescued by bystanders and military personnel.

Though the Federal Road Safety Corps, FRSC and police in Ebonyi State could not give details on the fatal accident 24 hours after emergency rescue operations by residents and passers-by, the Ebonyi State Coordinator, National Youth Service Corp, NYSC, Foluke Oladeinde confirmed that the incident affected Prospective Corps members.

“My State of mind now is not really okay, pls. It affected Prospective Corp members pls” the Ebonyi State NYSC coordinator Stated.
