Ikot Abasi Group Advocates for Ranking Senator in Akwa Ibom South

A socio-political group, Ikot Abasi Federal Constituency Renaissance Movement, has called for the continued representation of Akwa Ibom South Senatorial District by a ranking senator, citing the benefits of experience, influence, and constituency development.

In a press statement issued on April 19, 2026, and signed by its Contact and Mobilization Officer, Imoh Udoma, the group said a returning senator offers legislative stability and a stronger capacity to deliver democratic dividends compared to a first-term lawmaker.

The group noted that ranking senators possess institutional knowledge and experience that enable them to function more effectively in the National Assembly.

According to the statement, such lawmakers are better positioned to focus on consolidating and completing ongoing projects, rather than spending their early years navigating legislative processes.

It also highlighted that, under Senate Standing Orders, ranking senators are eligible to occupy key leadership roles, including committee chairmanships and principal offices.

These positions, the group argued, come with increased influence, oversight responsibilities, and improved access to federal resources, which can translate into greater developmental opportunities for their constituencies.

Citing historical precedent, the movement referenced former Senator Udoma Udo Udoma, who represented Akwa Ibom South and rose to the position of Senate Chief Whip during his second term.

The group said his elevation contributed to increased federal presence and development in the district.

It further added that the current ranking status of Senator Ekong Sampson places Akwa Ibom South in a favourable position to secure similar advantages in leadership and constituency development.

According to the group, ranking senators command greater respect and access within the Senate, which enhances their ability to attract federal interventions and implement constituency-focused projects.

The movement, therefore, urged stakeholders in Ikot Abasi Federal Constituency to support continuity in representation to sustain the perceived benefits associated with a ranking senator.

It concluded that maintaining experienced leadership in the Senate would ensure stronger advocacy, increased influence, and improved socio-economic outcomes for the constituency.
