House Of Reps Passes Bill On State Police

As a show of seriousness on the need to urgently address the current insecurity ravaging Nigeria, the House of Representatives on Thursday passed the state police bill.

This passage followed physical voting on the floor during the plenary session presided over by the Speaker of the House, Tajudeen Abbas, with Two hundred and eighty-eight (288) lawmakers voting in support of the bill and four against.

The bill seeks to strengthen Nigeria’s security architecture by creating an additional layer of policing while providing constitutional safeguards, clearly defined operational frameworks, oversight mechanisms, and delineation of powers between federal and state policing authorities.

Meanwhile, the bill on the establishment of state police has scaled through second reading in the Senate.

According to reports, the Senate deferred the debate to the Senate Committee on Constitutional Review while the Senate President Godswill Akpabio assured that the lawmakers will vote on the bill during their next sitting.
