A 7-man special committeea headed by the Chief of Saff to the Governor Pastor Caleb Ajagba has been set up by the Abia state government to recover all encumbered schools in the state, numbering over 180.
Other members of the committee are: The Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, Mr Ikechukwu Uwana, the commissioner for Lands and Housing, Mr Chaka Chukwumerije, the Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, Prince Uzo Nwachukwu, the GM UCDA Mr Kingsley Agomuoh, the GM, Greater Aba Development Agency, Mr Uche Ukeje, the Chief Security Officer to the Governor, Sir Ken Nwosu and Commissioner for Education Professor Uche Eme Uche who is serve as secretary.
The commissioner for information and Culture Prince Okey Kanu who disclosed this while briefing the press on the outcome of this week’s executive council meeting presided over by Governor Alex Otti, said terms of reference include the identification and recovery of all alienated and encumbered schools in the state.
He made it clear that government that will not tolerate the use of those schools earlier returned to the missionaries by the previous administration for any other purpose other than academic activities, insisting that they must be used for educational purposes.
According to Prince Kanu, a full diagnostic assessment of the educational sector has been conducted, adding that 12, 000 teachers in the public schools would undergo capacity building this summer holidays to prepare them for the emergent new look schools that government would have from September this year.
He further revealed that work has commenced at the Federal College of Education, Ofeme, Umuahia North LGA fully supported by the State Government, pointing out that the state government has supported the college to secure office at the Okpara round about for a smooth take off of activity.
The Commissioner also warned that henceforth, those driving with covered or without vehicle number plates would be apprehended and punished accordingly by security agencies.
In his speech, the Chief Press Secretary to the Governor, Mr. Ukoha Njoku Ukoha explained that his office is carrying out the update of the activities of the MDAs through documentary to showcase achievements of Governor Alex Otti in various MDAs.
