The Mayor of Umunneochi, Chief Sunny Afurobi, has applauded the resilience, and impressive performance of Team Umunneochi, in the ongoing Governor’s Cup, – “Abia Soccer Fiesta 2026”.
Speaking at Ubakala Stadium, Umuahia, shortly after the thrilling encounter between Team Umunneochi and Team Arochukwu, which ended 1–0 in favour of Team Umunneochi, the Mayor expressed delight at the team’s “can do” spirit.
While urging them to maintain their team spirit throughout the competition, the Mayor lauded both the management and players for their determination, which earned them the crucial three points in the game.
Mayor Afurobi assured the team of his continued support, expressing confidence in their ability to emerge victorious at the end of the competition.
He also praised the players for overcoming their initial setbacks and remaining focused on achieving success, while wishing them more victories in subsequent matches.
The Council Boss further commended the Governor of Abia State, Dr. Alex Otti, for initiating and sponsoring the Abia Soccer Fiesta, noting that the competition is positively engaging the Youths.
He pointed out that the tournament would help discover talents capable of competing at national and international levels.
In their separate remarks, the Team Manager, Hon. David Mba, and the LGA Coordinator of Team Umunneochi, Architect Chief Obinna Frank Obi, expressed gratitude to the Mayor for his personal presence and support during the match.
They noted that his all round support greatly motivated both the players and coaching crew, contributing to their first victory in the tournament.
They therefore vowed to continue giving their best in pursuit of the championship.
Team Umunneochi is scheduled to face Team Isuikwuato in their next match later this week.
