The Abia State Government through the approval of Governor Alex Chioma Otti, has banned the operation of commercial motorcycle operations, popularly known as “Okada,” within the metropolitan areas of Umuahia, Aba, and Ohafia.
A release endorsed by the commissioner for information, Prince Okey Kanu says the ban takes effect from Monday, June 22, 2026.
The release explains that the policy forms part of the Government’s ongoing efforts to strengthen security, enhance public safety, improve traffic management, and promote a more organized transportation system in the affected urban centres.
The release therefore directs all commercial motorcycle operators to cease operations within the designated metropolitan areas on or before the effective date.
It warns that Security agencies and relevant enforcement authorities have been mandated to ensure strict compliance with this directive, adding that any individual or operator found violating the order shall be arrested and the motorcycle involved confiscated.
The release to this end calls on residents, transport operators, community leaders, and members of the public to cooperate fully with the authorities in implementing the directive for the collective safety and development of the State.
