Speaker Edo House Of Assembly Resigns Amid Impeachment Moves

All is not well with the Edo State House of Assembly as reports coming in indicate that the speaker, Rt Hon Blessing Agbebaku is no longer occupying the seat.

There conflicting reports as to how Rt Hon Agbebaku left the office on Monday.
While one account has it that the speaker resigned amid reported moves by some lawmakers to impeach him, another report says the speaker was impeached.

Rt Hon Agbebaku’s media aide, Ivy Adodo-Ebojele, who confirmed his resignation in a Facebook post, said details surrounding the former Speaker’s exit would be disclosed later.

However, another report claiming that he was impeached during the plenary on Monday August 17, 2026, disclosed that the Deputy Speaker, Osawmonyi Atu, who represents Orhiownmon 1 constituency, has been appointed the Speaker of the House.

Rt Hon Agbebaku who represents Owan West Constituency had served as Speaker of the eighth Edo State House of Assembly since June 2023.

He was elected on the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, and defeated the All Progressives Congress, APC, in January 2025.

Analysts say this move may not be unconnected with the move to solidify the hold of the ruling APC in the House against 2027 polls and a possible second term for the Incumbent Governor.
