Electoral Act Amendment: Senate President convenes emergency session

There are indications that the Senate is to reconsider its stand on the transmission of election results in realtime as its president Godswill Akpabio has convened an emergency plenary session on Tuesday (10/2/26)

A statement endorsed by the clerk of the Senate, Emmanuel Odo, directs all Senators to be present at noon.

“The President of the Senate, Godswill Akpabio has directed the reconvening of plenary for an emergency sitting on Tuesday, February 10th 2026,” the statement read.

Reports indicate that the reconvening could be attributed to the Senate’s February 4 rejection of a proposed amendment for mandatory real-time electronic transmission of election results in the Electoral Act.

Recall, the rejection sparked widespread criticism from Activists and groups who argued that such a decision undermines electoral transparency ahead of 2027 polls.

According to reports, the session is likely to result in reconsidering the amendment amid public outcry.
