Xenophobic Attacks: Nigerian Students Warn South Africa

The unrelenting xenophobic attacks against Nigerians and other nationals in South Africa may likely leadership to retaliation measures in Nigeria as the leadership of the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS), Southwest Zone D, has expressed deep outrage over the renewed wave of xenophobic attacks in South Africa.

NANS in a statement endorsed by Comrade Adeyemo Josiah Kayode, aka (BILLIONCODES), Coordinator, NANS Southwest (Zone D), noted that the recent killing of two Nigerians is not just an isolated tragedy but a painful reminder of a recurring pattern of hostility and violence against Nigerians.

“We categorically state that the continued targeting of Nigerians under any guise is unacceptable and must come to an immediate end,” he said.

According to the statement, NANS Southwest is mobilizing to take decisive and lawful action by organizing peaceful picketing and mass advocacy against South African business interests operating in Nigeria.

“This will include major corporations such as MTN Group and MultiChoice Group. It is morally indefensible for businesses to thrive in an environment where the lives of Nigerians are protected, while Nigerians are subjected to fear and violence elsewhere.

“This contradiction will no longer be tolerated,” the statement vowed.

It, therefore, called on the South African government and relevant authorities to urgently demonstrate a genuine commitment to protecting foreign nationals, particularly Nigerians, and to ensure that justice is served in all reported cases of violence.

The statement pointed out that silence, delayed responses, or symbolic gestures will not suffice, stressing that the safety, dignity, and rights of Nigerians mustbe guaranteed, not negotiated.

It, however, made it clear that Nigerian students will not stand idly by while the lives of their compatriots are endangered
