The boxing community in Nigeria in particular and Africa has been thrown into mourning following the sudden death of Segun ‘Success’ Olanrewaju, who died after collapsing during a boxing match in Ghana on Saturday.
Olanrewaju, a respected figure in Nigerian boxing who previously held both National and West African light-heavyweight titles, was said to have
lost consciousness while facing Ghanaian boxer Jon Mbanugu at Fight Night 15 of the Ghana Professional Boxing League at Bukom Boxing Arena.
Attempts to revive the renowned boxer inside the ring failed and was later confirmed dead to the bewilderment of the boxing world.
Online reports indicate that he was leading on points before the tragic incident occurred.
Olarenwaju’s contributions to the sport in Nigeria and across West Africa have been widely acknowledged, with colleagues and fans paying tribute to his legacy.
