An environmentalist, Kelvin Ogbonnaya Maximus, has identified environmental security as a critical tool for healthy living, sustainable development, national productivity, and public health safety.
Speaking in an interview to mark this year’s World Health Day, the Convener of Health, Environment and You (HEY) stressed that environmental security is a shared responsibility, noting that a cleaner and greener Rivers State is essential for healthy living.
Maximus warned that society is gradually “sliding towards health poverty,” driven by environmental degradation, poor sanitation, and pollution, which he said affects all individuals regardless of status or location.
He called on governments at all levels to intensify efforts in policy regulation, public education, and enforcement, while promoting sustainable waste management systems and circular economy practices.
According to him, “As we commemorate this year’s World Health Day under the theme ‘Together for Health…’, it is important to recognize that environmental security remains a critical foundation for sustainable development, national productivity, and public health safety.
“Today, we are gradually sliding toward what can be described as health poverty, a situation where environmental degradation, poor sanitation, and pollution continue to threaten the well-being of our communities. Pollution does not discriminate; it affects everyone regardless of status, location, or background.”
He, however, emphasised that the responsibility for ensuring a healthy environment does not rest on government alone, urging citizens to adopt proper waste disposal methods, comply with environmental regulations, and embrace sustainable lifestyles.
Maximus further pointed out the need for expanded public awareness campaigns, stricter enforcement of environmental laws, and investment in systems that convert waste into valuable resources.
He reaffirmed HEY’s commitment to driving advocacy, mass education, and capacity building in sustainable waste management and public health safety through collaboration and community engagement.
“Together, let us protect our environment and secure our health for generations to come,” he said.
