Following the unanimous approval of the National Council of State, a Senior Advocate of Nigeria, SAN, and indigene of Kogi State, North Central Nigeria, Professor Joash Ojo Amupitan (SAN) has been named the new Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu who presented Amupitan as the nominee to succeed Professor Mahmood Yakubu that exited after two terms after serving from 2015 till October 2025, noted that the new INEC Boss is apolitical and the first Kogi, indigene to be nominated to occupy the position.
Council members unanimously supported the nomination, with Governor Ahmed Usman Ododo describing Amupitan as a man of integrity.
President Tinubu is expected to send Amupitan’s name to the Senate for screening in line with the constitution.
Born 58 years ago, Amupitan who hails Ayetoro Gbede, Ijumu LGA in Kogi State, is a Professor of Law at the University of Jos, Plateau and became a Senior Advocate of Nigeria in September 2014.
An Alumnus of UNN, he also earned an LLM at UNIJOS in 1993 and a PhD in 2007, and was the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Administration) at the University of Jos
before his appointment.
