Former Governor of Imo State elected on the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, Dr Achike Udenwa, has officially joined the African Democratic Congress (ADC).
Dr Udenwa’s membership registration which is aimed at boosting the party’s profile in the state ahead of the 2027 general elections was consummated on Thursday at his Amaifeke Ward in Orlu Local Government Area, where he was registered as member number 001.
According to reports, the former governor was registered by the ward secretary, Hon. Anthony Okoro, while the ward chairman, Engr. Uzonna Oriowe, presented him with his ADC membership card.
Baring his mind after the exercise, Dr Udenwa said his decision to join the ADC followed wide consultations and careful reflection, adding that the party provides a credible platform for accountable leadership.
“I joined the ADC because it is made up of people of integrity, many of whom I worked with during my administration,” he said.
“The party offers a credible platform for internal democracy and accountable governance. My decision is driven by service to the people and the need to strengthen governance in Imo State and Nigeria.”
He described his registration as number 001 in his ward as symbolic, noting that it was important for him to begin his political journey in the party from the grassroots.
He called on Imo residents to start joining the ADC in large numbers, describing the party as a vehicle for political liberation and improved governance.
Dr Udenwa further advised party leaders to remain united and accommodating as the party expands in membership.
“Let us lead with love and unity. We must work hard, welcome newcomers warmly and remain focused if we are to win elections and restore hope to our people,” the former governor appealed.
In his reaction, the Imo State Chairman of the ADC, Prof. James Okoroma, described Udenwa’s defection as a landmark moment for the party in the state.
He pointed out that since the party’s declaration in Enugu on December 31, 2025, the ADC had continued to attract prominent figures from across the political spectrum.
“The entry of Chief Achike Udenwa into the ADC significantly strengthens our party. Registering him as Number 001 in Amaifeke Ward underscores our commitment to grassroots mobilisation and statewide expansion,” the party Chairman noted.
Welcoming the former governor, the Amaifeke Ward Chairman, Engr. Uzonna Oriowe, expressed confidence that Udenwa’s entrance into the party would enhance the ADC’s prospects in future elections.
In their speeches, the ADC Orlu Zonal Chairman, Hon. Ezeru Damian, and the Orlu LGA Chairman, Chief Alloy Oluigbo, noted that Dr Udenwa’s decision to join the ADC signalled the beginning of a new political momentum in Imo State.
