The Director General, National Youth Service Corps NYSC Brigadier General Olakunle Nafiu says Abia state is now the most preferred state of service for Corps members from across the federation.
Brigadier General Nafiu who made the revelation when he led a delegation to visit Abia Governor, Dr Alex otti commended the Governor for the prevailing peace, security and conviviality in the State which has brought the State to limelight.
The NYSC DG who disclosed that 8,890 corps members are currently serving in the state, comprising 5,083 females and 3,805 males, attributed the high number of female corps members serving in the State to the relative peace and security prevailing in the state.
Brigadier General Olakunle Nafiu who thanked Governor Otti for his intervention at the NYSC orientation camp expressed satisfaction with the infrastructural facelift at the orientation Camp.
According to him, the first phase of the renovation has improved facilities at the camp.
He also thanked Governor Otti for increasing monthly allowance of Corps Members serving in the state , noting that unlike some states where medical Doctors, Nurses, Pharmacists reject their posting, Abia alone has 343 medical personnel gladly serving in the state.
Responding, Abia State Governor, Dr Alex Otti announced the approval of the commencement of the second phase of renovation works at the NYSC orientation camp at Umunna, Bende Local Government Area.
While disclosing that his administration has already embarked on rehabilitation of the NYSC permanent orientation camp, the Governor explained that the approval for the second phase was aimed at providing corps members with a safe and conducive environment throughout their service year, pointing out that he was embarrassed by the state of the facility when he first visited the camp.
Governor Otti assured the National Youth Service Corps of his administration’s continued support to improve the welfare of corps members, stressing that his administration regards corps members deployed to Abia not merely as visitors undertaking national service, but as citizens of the state.
He assured the NYSC leadership that the state government would continue to cooperate with the scheme as well as improve the experience of corps members and however called for the deployment of more healthcare personnel, to assist his administration intensifies efforts to expand access to quality healthcare services across Abia.
