As the crisis in Nigeria’s leading opposition party, People’s Democratic Party, PDP, continues to deepen some members have held a peaceful protest at the United States Embassy in Abuja.
This action coming on the heels of the designation of Nigeria as a country of particular concern, CPC, by President Donald Trump and the threat to strike to defend Christians in northern Nigeria, is seen as an invitation to the US Government to intervene in the recent shameful acts by major players in the umbrella party with one faction allegedly linked to the ruling APC, which the protesters claim, are aimed at stifling the opposition and making Nigeria a one party country.

Reports say the protesters carrying placards with different captions are seeking the support of the international community to safeguard Nigeria’s democracy and prevent the country from sliding to a one-party system.
According to sources, they submitted letters at the US Embassy, the European Union complex, and the Ministry of Justice.
Recall, the PDP has been enmeshed in crisis since 2023, leading to leaders of the party who are divided into two factions recently engaging in counter suspension of each other.
Over the weekend, the national chairman, Umar Damagum, along with some members of the National Working Committee announced the suspension of the party’s National Secretary, Samuel Anyanwu, National Organising Secretary Umar Bature, and other principal officers, an action that was countered by the Samuel Anyanwu led faction that in turn suspended Damagun, National Publicity Secretary Debo Ologunagba, and four other principal officers of the party.
