Legal luminary and leader of Ukwa – Ngwa nation, Chief Theo Nkire has ahead of Ngwa Day 2026 beckoned on Ngwa sons and daughters at home and diaspora to participate actively and come out in their numbers to make the occasion holding December 28 at Ngwa High School, Aba with the theme “Ngwaness – Umunnabuike,” a huge success.
Chief Nkire who spoke to Ngwa Day Media Committee in his Aba residence after hosting the Planning Committee led by Dr. Brightman Onyenbi for the second time on the way forward, said: “My expectation and desire is to ensure.a very successful outing in this year’s celebration.”
The elder statesman, a repository of Ngwa history, revealed that Ndi Ngwa have been celebrating Ngwa Day years back. Chief Nkire recalled that he first attended Ngwa Day at Okpuala Ngwa in 1954 at the age of 11 as a Standard 3 pupil of St. Cyprian’s School, Umuojima.
He further disclosed that the event organised then by the Ngwa Clan Union was headed by Chief J. N. Wachuku and Chief J. W. Ubani over 70 years ago.
According to “De Theo,” as he is popularly called, the aim of the new edition of Ngwa Day which incepted in 2024 and championed by Ngwa Social Club is the same – to showcase Ngwa culture and heritage.
The legal luminary maintained that marking Ngwa Day at Aba as currently is the case, does not obliterate the the fact that Okpuala Ngwa is the ancestral homestead of the Ngwa man. He pointed out that the first day of the two occasion under the present arrangement kicks off from Okpuala Ngwa in recognition and respect of the ancestors of Ngwaland.
On whether Ngwa Day could be devoid of politics, Chief Nkire, the first Attorney General of Abia State, emphatically stated that It is not possible because “man is a political animal.”
In his words: “But all our sons and daughters are welcome whether they are in politics or not. Our people belong to different political parties and we respect their choice and we expect each one to respect the other’s right to choose.”
