President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to modernising the Nigerian Army and strengthening the country’s defence industry to improve national security and tackle emerging threats.

The President made the pledge in a message delivered by Vice-President Kashim Shettima at the grand finale of the 163rd Nigerian Army Day Celebration held on Monday, July 6, 2026 at Yakubu Gowon Stadium.
Tinubu said the Federal Government would continue investing in modern military capabilities to ensure the Nigerian Army remains equipped to confront contemporary security challenges while enhancing its operational readiness.
According to him, the administration is also committed to strengthening Nigeria’s defence manufacturing capacity through the revitalisation of the Defence Industries Corporation of Nigeria, describing local defence production as critical to national security and economic development.

The President welcomed the establishment of the African Armed Forces Forum, describing it as a strategic initiative that would deepen defence diplomacy, promote knowledge sharing and enhance collaboration among African militaries.
He noted that the partnership between the Nigerian Army and Great Minds Event Management reflected the growing importance of collaboration between the public and private sectors in advancing defence innovation and indigenous military production.
He said the Federal Government would continue supporting research, innovation and capacity building to ensure Nigeria develops sustainable solutions to its security challenges.
The President described the Nigerian Armed Forces as one of Africa’s finest institutions, saying the military has continued to distinguish itself through professionalism, discipline and dedication to protecting both Nigeria and international peace.

According to him, the Armed Forces have become a source of pride for the continent through their contributions to peacekeeping operations and regional security, adding that their sacrifices extend beyond Nigeria’s borders.
Tinubu praised officers and soldiers for their courage and commitment, noting that the peace enjoyed by millions of Nigerians was made possible by the vigilance, discipline and sacrifices of the military.

Speaking on the theme of the 2026 Nigerian Army Day Celebration, “Protecting the Nation and Serving the People: A Way Forward for the Nigerian Army,” the President said it reflected the enduring relationship between the military and the citizens it serves.
He paid tribute to fallen officers and soldiers who laid down their lives in defence of the country, assuring their families that their sacrifices would never be forgotten.
The President also acknowledged the invaluable contributions of the Nigerian Navy, the Nigerian Air Force and other security agencies in safeguarding the nation’s sovereignty and territorial integrity.
He further emphasised the need for stronger cooperation among African nations in intelligence sharing, border security, counter-terrorism operations, cyber security, climate security and the deployment of artificial intelligence in modern defence operations.
Tinubu assured Nigerians that his administration would continue improving the operational capabilities and combat readiness of the Armed Forces through strategic investments and emerging technologies.
Speaking at the event, Rivers State Governor, Sir Siminalayi Fubara commended the Nigerian Army for its professionalism, improved operational capacity and commitment to preserving Nigeria’s unity and security.
The governor stressed that the welfare of military personnel should receive greater attention, noting that better welfare packages would further motivate officers and soldiers to perform their constitutional responsibilities effectively.
According to Gov. Fubara, any government seeking improved security must prioritise the welfare of members of the Armed Forces, whose sacrifices often come at great personal cost.
He expressed appreciation to the Army leadership for selecting Rivers State to host the 163rd Nigerian Army Day Celebration, describing the decision as a strong endorsement of the peace and stability currently prevailing in the state.
Gov. Fubara said hosting the national event had effectively countered negative narratives portraying Rivers State as insecure, insisting that the successful gathering of top military officers and dignitaries demonstrated confidence in the state’s security architecture.
The governor also applauded the military parade, tactical displays and demonstrations, saying they showcased the Nigerian Army’s growing professionalism, technological advancement and enhanced manpower development.
He commended President Tinubu for supporting the Nigerian Army through investments aimed at strengthening its operational capacity and improving its effectiveness in addressing security challenges.
Fubara reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to supporting all security agencies operating in Rivers State, noting that government would continue providing the necessary assistance to enable them to succeed in protecting lives and property.
Earlier, the Chief of Army Staff, Waidi Shaibu, commended President Tinubu for his unwavering support to the Nigerian Army, particularly in enhancing its operational capabilities and strengthening national defence.
The Army Chief also praised Governor Fubara for providing a peaceful environment and sustained support for military operations in Rivers State.
Shaibu said the annual Army Day Celebration serves as a reminder of the sacrifices, resilience and enduring legacy of the Nigerian Army while reaffirming its commitment to defending the nation against terrorism, insurgency and other evolving security threats.
