Following renewed bandit attacks on several communities, residents of Bodinga Local Government Area of Sokoto State on Friday staged a protest, blocking the Bodinga–Sokoto highway, calling for urgent government intervention.
In a post on X, Journalist Bakatsine, who reports on insecurity in North-West Nigeria, disclosed that the protesters accused authorities of failing to protect communities from the persistent attacks, which has resulted in many people fleeing their homes.
Bakatsine wrote: “UPDATE: A protest is ongoing in Bodinga, where residents have blocked the major road in the LGA (Bodinga-Sokoto way) to demand urgent government intervention following renewed bandit attacks on villages in the area.
“Residents say the attacks have left people dead, displaced families and separated relatives, with some still searching for missing loved ones.”
According to him, the affected villages where citizens have filed their homes as a result of attacks include: Danchadi, Dabagi, Karaje and Taƙule.
Also residents of Zango, Biri, Illela, Taƙule, Horo, Danbaro and other neighbouring communities had deserted their villages over fears of further attacks.
The Friday protest followed reports of fresh attacks that allegedly claimed lives, displaced families and left several residents missing.
The Sokoto State Government and security agencies are yet to officially react to the reported attacks or the protest.
