The coast has become clear for former president, Goodluck Jonathan as a Federal High Court sitting in Abuja has cleared him to contest the 2027 presidential election.
Delivering judgement on Tuesday in suit filed by an Abuja-based lawyer, Johnmary Jideobi, Justice Peter Lifu held that Jonathan is eligible and can participate in the 2027 presidential election.
Jideobi, had approached the court seeking an order to restrain Jonathan from presenting himself to any political party as a candidate in the 2027 presidential race.
The plaintiff had urged the court to determine whether, in line with Sections 1(1), (2), (3) and 137(3) of the 1999 Constitution, the former president remains eligible to seek the office again.
He also demanded the court to bar the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) from accepting, processing, or publishing Jonathan’s name as a presidential candidate.
Recall, a faction of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) led by Kabiru Tanimu Turaki had last week reportedly granted Jonathan a waiver and adopted him as its preferred presidential candidate.
Meanwhile, Jonathan is yet to officially react to the urge by the PDP faction for him to challenge President Tinubu in 2027.
