Two Ministers eyeing political positions in the 2027 general elections on Monday (30/3/26) resigned from the cabinet of president Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

They are: Minister of Foreign Affairs, Yusuf Maitama Tuggar and the Minister of State for Humanitarian Affairs, Dr. Yusuf Tanko Sununu

While Tuggar is said to be pursuing the Bauchi State governorship, Sununu is reported to have decided to run for the Senate seat in Kebbi State.

According to statements reaching Hanto Daily News, whlie Kimiebi Ebienfa, spokesman of the foreign Ministry confirmed the resignation of his Minister, the Minister of State, Sununu personally confirmed his resignation.

The resignations followed a presidential directive issued earlier in March through an order, communicated via the office of Secretary to the Government of the Federation, George Akume, directing all political appointees seeking elective positions to resign by March 31, 2026.

The directive applies to ministers, ministers of state, special advisers, senior special assistants, special assistants, personal assistants, and heads of federal agencies. It is in line with Section 88(1) of the Electoral Act, 2026, and is aimed at preventing conflicts of interest as Nigeria prepares for the 2027 elections.
