In its bid to boost Grassroots sports development, the Abia State Government is to collaborate with a professional boxing promoting firm, IKEUJ Enterprises in talent hunt in schools in the State.
Abia Government in a release addressed to all public secondary schools in the state and endorsed by the Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Basic and Secondary Education, Mrs Uchechukwu Kalu, informed them of Government’s decision to engage in Grassroots boxing talent hunt in schools with the renowned professional firm known to have carried out successfully, a similar programme in neighbouring Enugu State.
The State Government therefore directed them to grant the company run by an Ex- International Boxer, Mazi Ikechukwu Okoronkwo, access to students for proper guidance and training.
Meanwhile, the Abia State House of Assembly, Rt Hon Emmanuel Emeruwa, has vowed to partner with IKEUJ Boxing Promotion for the grassroots talent hunt in the seventeen Local Government Areas of the State .
Speaking when the CEO of the firm, Mazi Okoronkwo, visited him , Rt Hon Emeruwa commended the move to empower youths through sports.
Reacting to the developments, the Licensed Boxing Promoter, Mazi Ikechukwu Okoronkwo thanked the Governor, Dr Alex Otti, the speaker, Rt Hon Emeruwa and the state government for deeming it wise to engage in Grassroots boxing talent hunt.
He, therefore, assured that he will, like he did, in Enugu State ensure that the programme produces future champions that will bring laurels and boost the economy.
Hanto Daily News reports that the Grassroots boxing talent hunt initiated by IKEUJ Enterprises had produced many medalists for Enugu State contingent at various levels of boxing competitions in the recent past.
