World Cancer Day: Rivers Govt Strengthens Cancer Awareness, Screening Efforts

The Rivers State Government says it is totally committed to reducing the burden of cancer through strengthened healthcare systems, prevention programmes and improved access to screening and treatment services.

Speaking at the 2026 World Cancer Day, with the theme “United by Unique,” the Commissioner for Health, Dr. Adaeze Oreh, noted that the event provides an opportunity to raise awareness, promote prevention and recommit to collective action against cancer, which remains one of the leading causes of illness and death globally.

She made it clear that many forms of cancer are preventable, while others can be successfully treated if detected early, and stressed the importance of sustained public awareness, early diagnosis and equitable access to quality healthcare.

Dr Oreh pointed out that the state government is prioritising cancer prevention programmes, expanding screening and diagnostic services, and ensuring that treatment and care are accessible and affordable to residents, adding that investments are also being made in the training of healthcare professionals and the upgrading of health facilities to improve cancer care delivery.

While highlighting prevention as a critical pillar in the fight against cancer, the Commissioner enjoined residents to avoid tobacco use, limit alcohol consumption, maintain healthy diets, engage in regular physical activity and protect themselves against cancer-related infections.

She also emphasised the importance of early detection and charged Residents to utilise available screening services and overcome fear, stigma and misinformation associated with cancer.

The Commissioner commended cancer survivors for their resilience, caregivers for their dedication and healthcare workers for their continued service, describing their efforts as a source of hope for communities across the state.

She called on all stakeholders to unite in closing the cancer care gap and ensuring that every resident of Rivers State has access to timely, affordable and quality cancer services.
