Boxing Championship: Rumble in Enugu ends in style, Abia to host title defence

The South East Boxing Championship dubbed ‘Rumble in Enugu’ has ended with Zowe Chibuike Okoronkwo fondly called ‘The King Priest’, Israel Obinna Ogbodo ‘Easy Money’ and Chinaza Okoronkwo ‘The Emperor’ emerging champions in feather weight, super feather weight and light weight categories respectively.

In the first bout Chibuike Okoronkwo defeted Kumazi Daniels in unanimous decision after four rounds, Israel Ogbodo knocked out Tochukwu Okeke in round two while Chinaza Okoronkwo defeated Oche Adegene by point decision

Speaking with Hanto Daily News after the one day championship at the Post Primary School Management Board Hall beside NTA Enugu, on Wednesday, the promoter of the championship and Ex-international boxer Mazi Ikechukwu Okoronkwo described the outing as a huge success and a huge source of motivation to stage more boxing shows in the South East.

According to Mazi Okoronkwo, he is currently locked in discussions with the Abia State Government through the ministry of sports and youth development to stage the title defence in Abia State.

He noted that the goal is to use boxing to take youths out of the streets, help boxing graduates to secure their professional licenses and for overall national development.

The Championship which had the approval of the Nigerian Boxing Board of Control (NBB of C), attracted the presence of the speaker Enugu State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Uche Calistus Ugwu, Abia State Commissioner for Sports and Youth Development Sir Nwobilor Ananaba, officials from the National Sports Commission (NSC), stakeholders in sports from Enugu and other South East states amongst others.
