Rivers Politics: All May not be well, Wike’s allies absent from independence anniversary service

There are indications that real reconciliation may not have been totally achieved in the Rivers State political crisis that saw the proclamation of State of Emergency, six months ago and the recent restoration of full civilian administration headed by the elected Governor, his Deputy and members of the State House of Assembly.

At an interdenominational church service held this Sunday, 28/9/25 to mark the commencement of activities for Nigeria’s 65th Independence anniversary in Port Harcourt, that attracted the presence Governor Siminalayi Fubara, loyalists of former Governor Nyesom Wike were no where to be seen in the occasion many had thought will bring these actors together before the public.

The unexpected boycott became glaring with the absence of members of the Rivers State House of Assembly, elected local government chairmen, and political appointees installed by the former Sole Administrator, Vice Admiral Ibok-Ete Ibas (rtd.).

The event, that took place at the Cathedral Church of St. Paul’s, Port Harcourt was organised by the state government, as part of a series of programmes designed to celebrate the milestone and foster unity across political and religious lines.

The political boycott comes just days after Governor Fubara’s return to the Rivers State Government House on September 19, marking the end of a six-month suspension.

None of the Actors had so far officially reacted to the situation that has already resulted in any interpretations.
