Abia State Governor, Dr Alex Otti, on Tuesday inaugurated the newly retrofitted and digitally equipped 80-bed Obingwa General Hospital, Mgboko, naming it facility after the late former Executive Director of the Civil Liberties Organisation (CLO), Comrade Chima Ubani.
The Ubani General Hospital Mgboko is equipped with modern medical technology, a world-class theatre, digital beds, advanced laboratory and diagnostic facilities, a healing garden and a renewable energy system is expected to strengthen access to quality secondary healthcare in the area.
Performing the ceremony, Governor Otti gave reasons for naming the hospital after Comrade Ubani and described the late activist who died in an accident in 2005 as a courageous and champion of democracy, justice and the welfare of ordinary Nigerians.
Recalling late Ubani’s role in campaigns against military dictatorship and repressive economic policies, the Governor
expressed confidence that the hospital would expand access to quality medical services for hundreds of thousands of residents in Obingwa and beyond.
Addressing the gathering, the senator representing Abia South Senatorial District Senator Enyinnaya Abaribe pointed out that Governor Otti has many legacy projects scattered all over the state to his name and assured that the people of Obingwa and entire Abians will reciprocate the gesture in the forthcoming general elections.
In his speech, the Commissioner for Health, Professor Ogbonnaya Uche, said the remodeled 80-bed Obingwa General Hospital represents the Otti administration’s commitment to building a modern, accessible and technology-driven healthcare system.
The commissioner noted that the facility was equipped with telehealth technology that would enable health workers to connect patients, including pregnant women at primary healthcare centres, with specialists for early detection of complications and timely intervention as well as enable Nigerian medical professionals in the diaspora to support patient care within the locality.
In their remarks, the state Labor Party Chairman Mr Peter Azubuike and Eze Nwabiaraije Eneogwe while noting thatGovernor Otti does not discriminate against any section of the state, said that the Governor has through purposeful leadership restored their confidence in governance.
