The Oluebube A. Chukwu Foundation (OACF) has called for stronger collaboration among government institutions, CSOs, communities and justice-sector stakeholders to ensure effective implementation of non-custodial measures as a way to reduce overcrowding in correctional facilities and strengthen justice sector reform.
The Foundation made its position clear when it joined other Civil Society Organisations and key justice-sector stakeholders in Abia State in a sensitisation workshop held on August 12, 2026, at the RoLAC Conference Hall, Umuahia.
Represented by its Programme Manager, Helen Mannic, the OACF stressed the need for public awareness to address misconceptions about non-custodial measures.
In a presentation, a Superintendent of Corrections (SC), Blessing Nwanganga explained that the measures promote accountability, rehabilitation and reintegration while helping reduce pressure on correctional facilities.
The workshop organised under the Advancing Implementation of Non-Custodial Solutions (AI-NCS) Project, with support from the International IDEA and the European Union had discussions focused on alternatives to imprisonment, including probation, parole, suspended sentences and community service.
Hanto Daily News reports that OACF’s participation reinforces its commitment to rehabilitation, social inclusion, human-centred development and stronger communities, while supporting efforts towards a more effective, equitable and humane justice system in Abia State and Nigeria.
