Rivers Impeachment saga: Cracks begin to emerge among House Members

The pronouncement by Governor Siminalayi Fubara that the impeachment threat by the Rivers House of Assembly against him will be soon resolved has started manifesting as Two members of the Rivers House of Assembly have appealed to their colleagues to sheath their sword in the interest of the State.

The members including : the Minority Leader and member representing Omuma state constituency, Sylvanus Nwankwo and his colleague representing the Degema Constituency, Peter Abbey, have officially made a volt face in the bid to remove the Governor and his Deputy, urging their colleagues to retrace their steps.

Addressing Newsmen at a news conference in Port Harcourt this Monday (12/1/26), the duo explained that their decision followed an appeal from elders and leaders who begged for leniency.

They acknowledged that though constitutional issues had been raised against the Governor and his Deputy there was the need to “temper justice with mercy,” arguing that impeachment should be treated as a last resort.

“We are calling on our colleagues to reconsider this step and explore ways this matter can be resolved amicably, outside impeachment proceedings,” he said. “We have listened to the voices of elders and leaders who have appealed for restraint in the overall interest of Rivers State.”

“Yes, the governor may have infringed on parts of the Constitution, but we are human beings.

“You don’t raise the axe and swing it the same way. We have received appeals from leaders within and outside the state, and we believe an amicable settlement is possible.”

The Duo however noted that any peaceful resolution must also involve commitments from the Governor to avoid further constitutional violations, stressing that mutual restraint would help restore stability and confidence in governance.

According to them: “We appeal to our fellow colleagues to temper justice with mercy and see how we can solve this matter without the impeachment proceedings.

“Having listened to so many calls from our elders and leaders, both within and outside the state, we are begging our colleagues to reconsider our steps and see how this matter can be resolved amicably even though the governor and his deputy have infringed on the Constitution”.

Recall, the House of Assembly last Thursday last week commenced impeachment proceedings against the Governor and his Deputy over alleged gross misconduct.

Governor Fubara on Sunday while speaking during the Armed Forces Celebration and Remberance service urged the people to remain calm, assuring that the matter will soon be resolved.
